Joshua Kaufmann is the Executive Director of Teach Plus Chicago, where he leads the Teaching Policy Fellowship program and works with the Fellows to improve teacher preparation, evaluation and curriculum, among other issues. Josh joins Teach Plus with over 14 years of experience in education as a teacher and administrator. Most recently he served as the Senior Manager for Early College Initiatives at Chicago Public Schools (CPS), expanding opportunities for students to earn college credit while still in high school. In this role, Josh helped grow access to college courses by over 700% in three years. The programs he worked on included concurrent enrollment partnerships that make college courses available to thousands of Chicago students; the DeVry University Achievement Academy; and Chicago’s five Early College STEM Schools. Josh’s previous roles at CPS included evaluating the effectiveness of professional development and the 8th grade algebra initiative; developing data teams and protocols at 26 CPS high schools; and providing budget analysis and support to central office departments.
Prior to joining CPS, Josh taught English, ESL, and drama in both New York City and Namibia. In New York, he directed a variety of student-created plays, founded an after-school arts club, and prepared students for the state’s high-stakes Regents exam. In Namibia, he taught several sections of English, trained incoming teachers, ran the school library, and developed a program to train teacher-librarians for over 200 school libraries in his region.
Josh holds a BA in theater from the University of Iowa and an MA in public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.
