Forum Poll and Discussion: Reinventing Teacher Pay
Issue Background
Step-and-lane teacher pay scales for teachers were first implemented in the 1920s, as a way to combat widespread gender discrimination. Now, across the country, districts and unions have been working together to reinvent compensation systems with innovative new ways to reflect teachers’ skills and learning as professionals. Under the current system in most districts, teachers earn pay increases through automatic annual increases based on years of teaching and units of graduate study. In an increasing number of districts – in addition to automatic cost of living increases – teachers can earn pay increases based on factors such as improving student achievement, earning successful professional evaluations, contributing to school-wide improvement, working in the most academically challenged schools, and advancing their skills and knowledge.
