Dedicating time for teacher collaboration and job-embedded professional development is now more important than ever in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). As teachers, we know that time is critical to the success of our students. With a new Full School Day schedule and calendar, implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and a new evaluation system, we need to have significant time to address these changes. We are asking CPS to reinstate a minimum of eleven total days for professional development and we are asking for these days to be spread out throughout the academic year. Also, we request that CPS return teacher-directed1 time to professional development days, and to weekly teacher collaboration.
